Twitter and tweet

When will the madness stop.  This weekend Chelsea the football club were again beaten in their game, this time against Liverpool. Some joker sent a Tweet to the Merseyside police that a rape had occurred in the game and asked the police to investigate. The police seeing the humour in the situation sent a message to say what had happened was between consenting adults was no reason to investigate.
The "fringe" were up in arms saying the police had devalued the crime of rape and so the police had to make an apology.
Clearly no-one these days can any more be light hearted over anything without raising the ire of someone. There are people loaded down with issues, they carry a heavy load of bile and prejudice and cast around to trumpet their case at every opportunity.
There are so many categories, so many areas of no-go where to comment is liable to bring a heavy reprimand.
The feminists protect their sex. People of colour protect their history and any sort of prejudice. Fat people protect their diet. Gay people protect their hard won rights and push on for more.
I suppose it's the price we pay for the ease of communication since the corollary of that is that everyone can read what you write or say. The nature of society, like cholesterol is it gathers the disenfranchised, and disadvantaged into pools of disquiet which reinforce their clamour for recognition and change. They seize on anything which can be used to highlight their cause and use the Internet to make the authorities take notice. Frightened of being labelled reactionary the police and the politicians walk with fear around these groups since there have been a plethora of laws which were passed to protect against outright discrimination but which now are used often out of context.
Irrespective of the strength of the indictment the fear of the spotlight is far greater and common sense is the main casualty.
