A Christmas Election

Subject: A Christmas Election.

And so to add to the tinsel and the Christmas shopping we now have an election to cope with. Guided by the press coverage the outcome favours Boris as the press Barron's train their guns on one man Jeremy Corbyn. Seeking to demonise him as some sort of mad Rasputinesque character, who would if he could eat our children. This benign, people caring Socialist is castigated as the devil incarnate compared to the saintly Boris. All but the Daily Mirror and the Guardian depict Corbyn in at best, a bad light and with this wall to wall coverage and a population dependent on the information gleaned from the press what chance has Corbyn got.  His heartland Labour vote want to leave irrespective of the dire claims by the highly respected, Institute of Economic and Social Research that the economy will be 70bn worse off in 10 years time, a decline of 3.5% in living standards. These sober predictions clash with the shrill cry "get it done" as if getting it done were some panacea of wealth and prosperity. Well of course it will be for the few, the speculators the ones who insulate themselves against the effects of the economic downturn by speculating against the health of the economy in a way which will make them rich. The Johnson's and the Rees-Mogg's of this world have hedged their bets and the race is on to collect.
How can the upland dream of a more equitable Britain survive the squalor of the narcissistic claims of this current brand of Milton Friedman capitalism when the protagonists have such fire power to distort the minds of the common man or woman.
In legal terms one could claim harassment or mental abuse but in politics all is free and fair to say what you want irrespective of the truth or the harm a statement on the front page of the Mail or the Express carries. The bully or the racist chants in the football stadium we deal with and arrest people for them but the lies and character assassination which is printed each day in these news papers goes unchallenged.
Decent logical debate and disagreement is healthy in any society but the rise of ideological hate rags which is how I describe the Daily Mail and the Daily Express, not only against Corbyn but against so many things which it defines to be different to the editorial belief. Be it Europe or Immigration, the NHS or the unemployed, these parts of our social fabric are demonised and made ugly. The readers swallow their line hook line and sinker, distorting facts, inflaming passions they are foremost in the black art of false news and propaganda and yet whilst we decry the sabotage undertaken by the Russians to influence our elections we raise not a whimper against these cancerous tabloids who do far more harm to our society.
An example of todays headlines in the Daily Mail, 'Don't Let The Grinch Steal Your Christmas' with a unattractive photo of Jeremy Corbyn inset to the side whilst all the 'right wing' press project a jubilant Johnson with the inference of "getting it done" emblazoned across the page.
No one mentions the NIESR report about the possible consequences, that would only get in the way of ideological certainty.
